After
my first trip to Japan in July 2002 with my daughter, I wanted to know the names
and uses of many of the objects that we encountered during our trip. I found
that the book Everyday Japanese: A Basic Introduction to the Japanese Language
and Culture by Edward A. Schwarz and Reiko Ezawa (Passport Books, 1985)
helped me greatly in this regard. This photo glossary uses photographs from
my first trip to Japan as well as photographs taken during the July 2003 NCTA
Japan Study Tour.
The Japanese-English Photo Glossary Index has thumbnail images followed by Japanese words and brief English definitions. If you click on a thumbnail image you will link to a page that has a larger picture of the object in context, the short English definition, and information gleaned from a variety of sources. Below the Japanese term is the kanji for the word. Click on the word to hear the correct pronunciation. If you mouse-over the radicals you will find the meaning of the kanji radicals. Enjoy!
