COS UNVEILS NEW EAGLE FOOTBALL LOGO AND UNIFORMS
| Weed / COS - College of the Siskiyous Athletic
Director, Dennis Roberts and Head Football Coach, Eric Young, unveiled
the Eagle Football Team's "new look." Shown were two new design
elements, a new "Eagle" logo and the Siskiyou Cross insignia,
which are both, imprinted on the Eagle football helmets. Former COS Athletic
Trainer and retiree Robert Sanchez designed both elements. The new helmets
are "Siskiyou" blue, with a scarlet strip running front-to-back,
the Eagle logo placed on left side of the helmet, and the Siskiyou Cross
on the back of the helmet. Retired Athletic Trainer, Robert Sanchez, discussed the concept of a new eagle logo for all COS athletic teams, designed specifically for the COS Athletic Department, that had been a topic of discussion for many years. With the arrival of the new football coaching staff this season, and including their ideas for the "new look," the new Eagle logo was designed. Sanchez completed the design while working with Director Roberts; Program Specialist, Linda Sanchez; the Public Relations Office; and approved by Superintendent/President Dr. David Pelham. The Siskiyou Cross, a red circle and cross design, also designed by Sanchez, has been a part of the Eagle Football Program for many years. It is a spiritual symbol, which represents the circle of life, strength and protection, creating a bond through compassion, discipline, generosity and patience, for all members of the Eagle family. "This new uniform, helmet, and design work, has been in development since the end of the 2004 football season. It was an idea first developed by former Head Coach, Matt Sayre," shared Head Football Coach, Eric Young. The team wore the new helmets and suits for the first time at the Yuba College game September 3rd. "The COS Football Program has years of history and it carries forward a lot of tradition that we hope to continue to embrace," continued Coach Young, "the new look represents a new beginning, with new staff members, new students, and a new season." The District renovated at the Football Stadium over the past two years. In 2004 the bleachers were completely removed, and new bleachers were built, new sidewalks and fencing and a new practice field was added, and the concession stand was renovated. This past summer the press box was remodeled and play clocks were added to the end zones. "Change is always exciting. The new look for the Eagles, and with the leadership of our new Head Football Coach, we are kicking off a new era for the COS Eagles," said Athletic Director, Dennis Roberts. "We invite the public to attend our home games and see the new Eagle look." COS has four more games at the Weed Campus this fall. Scheduled are Marin College on October 1st; Feather River as the Homecoming Game, on October 15th; American River College on October 29th; and College of the Redwoods on November 5th. The season will end with rival Shasta College on 12th in Redding. "We hope the stands will be full of fans, who are here cheering our team on," continued Roberts. The Eagle Team consists of just over 100 players with roughly half of the team returning to the team this year. Coaching along with Young are two former COS Head Football Coaches, Phil Maas, as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebacker Coach; Greg Gatlin, as the Defensive Line Coach; Dan DeLeon, wide receivers and Recruiting Coordinator; Tim Frisbie, Offensive Line; Les Courtemanche, Quarterback Coach, and Gabe Raso, Defensive Backs. Both the coaches and the players have spent a lot of time preparing for the 2005 football season. Training and preparation actually began at the close of the 2004 football season. The players have been participating in an off-season conditioning and strengthening program and in spring football training. The coaches have taken on new responsibilities and spent the spring and summer recruiting players. The team hosts players from California, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Florida, Idaho, Nevada, Hawaii, Canada, and South Carolina. Their ages range from 17 to 23. Throughout the Eagle Football Season, Coach Young will be giving weekly live interviews on KSYC/KMJC Radio Station, with local radio personality, Rick Martin, every Thursday morning, at 8:15 a.m. Be sure to tune in to keep in touch with the COS Eagles! |
