Siskiyous’ Karlee Myers drives to the basket in the Eagles’ season opener against Consumnes River Tuesday, Nov. 13. Myers, who topped the GVC in scoring last season, led the women’s basketball team to a perfect 4-0 record in the Eagle’s opening week.

If the past week is any indication, the College of the Siskiyous women's basketball team means business for the 2007-08 season.

Opening the season with three straight home game was a welcome feeling for the girls, and they made the most of it by defeating Consumnes River, De Anza and Solano last week before hitting the road and toppling Modesto Monday to commence the season with a 4-0 record.

“We're very happy with the sweep,” head coach Tom Powers said. “We weren't home until after Christmas last year and we're extremely pleased with the results.”

Sophomore Karlee Myers, who a year ago led the Golden Valley Conference in scoring, had a huge home stand for the Eagles, scoring 36 points against Consumnes River, raining 34 on De Anza and chipping in 14 against Solano.

The Eagles, behind Myers' inspired play, killed the Consumnes River Hawks on fast breaks and with a flurry of 3-point plays. They stormed out to a 51-19 halftime lead last Tuesday, Nov. 13, in their season opener in Weed.

By the time the final buzzer sounded it was a 94-40 triumph.

De Anza gave the Eagles a tough match Friday, Nov. 16. The Dons jumped out to a 7-0 edge and carried a 40-39 lead into the half.

The visitors continued their hot shooting out of the locker room, extending their lead to 54-48.

The Eagles clawed back to tie it at 59 on two Myers free throws before freshman Kelly Stephens hit a three to give the lead back to Siskiyous.

A key steal by Eagle sophomore Kristi Arness in the final minutes sealed the victory for COS, 80-71.

Arness finished with 11 points and freshman Crissy Watts and Jazmin McDaniel added 10 a piece.

Siskiyous had eight three-pointers in the comeback victory.

Versus Solano Saturday night, the game was neither the mismatch that the Consumnes River game was, nor the competitive lead-changing game De Anza provided.

The Eagles led the entire game and finished with a 75-67 victory.

In their final game of the busy week, the Eagles took out Modesto 79-74 on their home court.

Watts hit three 3-point baskets to lead the Eagles with 22 points.

Arness added four treys and 20 points, while Myers and sophomore Ally West contributed 13 points each.

A full Siskiyous women's basketball preview will be included in next week's sports section.

On deck, the ladies host Sierra this Saturday, Nov. 24 in Weed.
