Makus gem not enough against Shasta
The College of the Siskiyous softball team lost a
heartbreaker, 2-1, in the opener of a Golden Valley Conference
doubleheader at Shasta College in Redding on Wednesday, April 7th.
Wendi Makus pitched her best game of the season, according
to COS coach Doug Eastman, but 2 unearned runs kept the Eagles from ending
Shasta's unbeaten streak in GVC play this season. The second game wasn't
close, as Shasta won it in five innings on the 8-run rule, 11-0.
Losing the opener stung even more because the Eagles missed some golden
scoring opportunities. Siskiyous had the bases loaded with nobody out in
the 6th inning but failed to score. "That was the pivotal point in the
game," Eastman said. "We played a super game, but we're not getting the
offense we need at this point."
Makus allowed 2 unearned runs on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts in 7 innings
against Shasta. "She kept them off balance by throwing her change-up for
strikes," Eastman said. Siskiyous had 7 hits in the game, as Cristina
Saldivar went 2-for-3, and Brin Tamblin tripled and scored a run.
The Eagles had only two hits in the nightcap, one each by Dallas Brown and
Kelsey Anhorn. Jamie Williams was the losing pitcher.
Pitching was strong at Feather River
Behind
the pitching of Wendi Makus and an offense that collected 16 hits, College
of the Siskiyous defeated Feather River, 8-3, in the second game of a
Golden Valley Conference doubleheader March 31st in Quincy. The Eagles
lost the opener, 2-1, despite seven strong innings by pitcher Jamie
Williams.
The Eagles took a 5-9 GVC record into an April 7th meeting with 14-0
Shasta in Redding.
Seven
Eagles had multiple hits in last week's second game, as Makus allowed 3
runs (2 earned) on 5 hits in 7 innings with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
Katie Miller was 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice; Cristina Saldivar
was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 runs batted in; and Kelsey Anhorn was
2-for-5 with a double and 2 runs.
Anne Marie Angulo was 2-for-4 with a triple; and Brin Tamblin, Dallas
Brown and Makus all had 2 hits apiece.
Tamblin was 2-for-3 in the opener, and Stefanie Gonsalves doubled.
Williams allowed 2 runs on 5 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Siskiyous is scheduled to return home next Wednesday, April 14th, to play
a doubleheader against Redwoods, beginning at noon.
Eagles sweep, get swept
The
Eagles swept a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader from Lassen March
24th in Weed, then lost twice Saturday, March 27th at Butte in Oroville.
Siskiyous was 4-8 in GVC play going into a March 31st twinbill at Feather
River.
"If we can finish the season with a .500 record, that will be a successful
year," said coach Doug Eastman.
A cold
wind blew as the Eagles defeated Lassen, 11-1 and 8-3. Jamie Williams of
Eagle Point, OR, was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing 3 hits, 1
earned run and 3 walks, while striking out 7 in 5 innings. Katie Miller
was 2-for-3 with 1 RBI, and Michelle Beck was 2-for-2 with a double and 2
RBIs.
Wendi Makus of Portland pitched all 7 innings in game two, allowing 2
earned runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts. Miller again had 2 hits, as did
Cristina Saldivar and Anne-Marie Angulo. Saldivar had a double, and Angulo
scored a run.
At Butte, Eastman said the Eagles faced the team with the best pitching in
the conference. Siskiyous lost twice, 8-2 and 8-0. Eastman estimated his
team committed 15 errors in the two games and was unable to move runners
around the bases.
"We had runners on every inning of both games, but couldn't get the big
hits," he said.
Brin Tamblin was 2-for-3 in game two, and Saldivar had a double. Williams
pitched all 7 innings of game one, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks,
but only 3 of the runs were earned. She had 6 strikeouts.
Makus struggled with her control in the nightcap, walking 5 in 5 innings
and allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts.
"That was uncharacteristic of Wendi," Eastman said of Makus' control
problems. "She averages less than one walk per game.
March 24:
College
of the Siskiyous swept a doubleheader today from Lassen College, as
Jaime Williams pitched the Eagles to an 11-1 victory in game one, and
Wendi Makus was the winning pitcher in an 8-3 game two win. The Eagles
improved their Golden Valley Conference record to 4-6 at the end of the
first round. Siskiyous, under the direction of head coach Doug Eastman,
manufactured run throughout the day. A two-run rally in game two
resulted from two bunt singles, three stolen bases, a fielder's choice
ground ball and a sacrifice fly. Having lost their third and fourth
place hitters previously this season, Eastman said the young Eagles are
doing what they can to score runs. They're scheduled to play Butte this
Saturday in Oroville.
