With a strong group of returning sophomores and a solid group of freshmen,
the College of the Siskiyous softball team has high hopes for the 2005
season. After winning 3 of their first 4 games, the Eagles are scheduled
to open their Golden Valley Conference season this afternoon in Weed against
Feather River - weather permitting. "We have a very talented team,"
said head coach Doug Eastman, who thinks his 2005 lineup, from 1 to 9,
may have more balance than the Eagles' 2003 team, which made it all the
way to the state championships. While many of this year's starters are
returning sophomores, including returning all-GVC first-teamer Kelsey
Anhorn, second team all-GVC pick Brin Tamblin and honorable mention pitcher
Wendi Makus, freshmen will play a key role for the Eagles. Freshman pitcher
Angela Cabral of Modesto allowed just five hits in her first two games,
including a 1-0 shutout win at Yuba College on Saturday, during which
she struck out 11 and walked just 1. Freshman catcher Jill Artoff of Rogue
River, OR, threw out three runners trying to steal in Saturday's doubleheader.
She also scored the only run in the opener on a wild pitch. Eastman said
the wild pitch occurred while Yuba was attempting to intentionally walk
the Eagles' clean-up hitter. The Eagles won Saturday's nightcap, 5-1,
as Makus improved her early season pitching record to 2-0, allowing just
4 hits and 1 unearned run while striking out 5 and walking 1. Tamblin
led off the game with a triple and scored 2 runs; Anhorn was 2-for-3 with
a triple, double, RBI and 2 runs; freshman Savannah Hensley of Brookings,
OR, was 2-for-3 with a run batted in; freshman Ashley Coleman of Molalla,
OR, had a triple; sophomore Michelle Beck doubled; and sophomore Christina
Saldivar had an RBI single. Eastman said he had his players do extra weight
training in the off-season and it is showing. He said Makus, especially,
is stronger this season and has more confidence. The Eagles split a season-opening
doubleheader at Santa Rosa February 12th, losing the first game, 3-1,
then winning the nightcap, 12-3. Cabral was the losing pitcher in the
opener even though she allowed just 2 hits in 7 innings and struck out
5. The Eagles had just 3 hits, including an RBI double by Coleman. The
second game ended after five innings because the Eagles were at least
8 runs ahead. Makus pitched 4 innings and Beck pitched 1. Beck, who was
the team's catcher last year and has moved to the outfield this season,
got the offense kick started with a bases loaded double that drove in
3 in the first inning. She was 2-for-4 for the game with 5 runs batted
in. Anhorn was 2-for-3 with a home run, double, 3 RBIs and 2 runs; Artoff
was 2-for-3 and scored 3 runs; and Tamblin was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. This
Saturday and Sunday, the Eagles are scheduled to play in a 38-team tournament
at Fresno City.
