Siskiyous Compete Strong at Aggie Open
The Eagles sent a limited squad to the UC Davis Aggie Open this past Saturday which featured Division I Universities UC Davis and Sacramento State as well as a large slate of D II and lower division Universities. The men’s roster included Tylan Lang, Myron Johnson, Donovan Cunningham, Zach Stoner and Stephen Dickinson and the women’s roster included Katie Anderson and Joanna Beem.
The most impressive performance of the day was by Freshman Katie Anderson. Katie set lifetime bests in all 3 events entered, and took firm position of second place on the all time women’s performance list in both the long jump and triple jump. Katie set a mark of 17’ 3.5” (6.5” improvement) in the long jump to place 10th and, without even hitting the board, leaped to a 33’ 8.5” triple to finish10th as well (8” improvement). Her 13.40 time in the 100m was a .04 second improvement. Joanna Beem ran strong in windy conditions and placed 17th overall with a 2:31.71 in the 800.
The men’s team was impressive…extremely impressive. Myron Johnson continued his undefeated streak in the triple jump as he bested not only the top JuCo mark maker in NorCal, Kai Wai Ng of De Anza, but also the entire field of D I Universities and lower division Universities as well. His jump of 47’ 10” was only 7” off the 25 year old school record and as Coach Maas put it “He never hit the board on any single one of his attempts. When he gets the board, the record will be history.” Myron also took second in the long jump with a mark of 22’ 8” only being beaten by professional jumper Jeff Billings who competed for UC Davis 8 years ago. Myron also ran a wind aided 11.17 in the 100m dash.
Freshman Tylan Lang finally got some competition in both sprints and ran extremely impressive times. In a somewhat weak heat, Ty ran a 10.81 to lose to only one College athlete and two “professional” athletes as he finished 4th in the 100. He also placed 4th in the 200 behind two other professional sprinters and one UC Davis athlete with a time of 21.85. Most impressive was his effort in the long jump where he placed 3rd overall in the meet, right behind Myron Johnson, with a mark of 22’ 6”. Ty is currently ranked 2nd in the 100, 2nd in the 200 and 2nd in the long jump in NorCal.
Stephen Dickinson set a season best in the 110 hurdles with a 15.21 (6th in the meet – 2nd in NorCal) and debuted in the College Triple Jump with a 44’ 5.5”. His leap puts him second in Conference behind Myron Johnson and 6th in NorCal. Zach Stoner, who has been very ill for the past two weeks, ran a 51.68 in the 400 to finish 21st overall.
Next weekend the Eagles head to one of the most beautiful and revered track facilities in the Nation…Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon for the Oregon Preview – U of O’s first outdoor competition of the season. The Eagles will once again send a small contingent of athletes to compete as most are back home seeing family during spring break. The meet will be held on March 20th and field events start at 12:30 with running events beginning at 1:00 pm.
