Eagles make net postseason
By Rob McCallum
Unsure of whether their season was over or not, the College of the
Siskiyous volleyball team got a bit of good news Sunday, the Eagles
are headed to the playoffs. Idle since their regular season finale November
11th, COS learned they would travel to Taft next Wednesday as the
No. 3 seed in the Northern California playoffs.
"It ought to be a lot of fun," coach Tom Powers said. "We've
been off for a while, but we'll hit the gym and see where we're at."
The Eagles (9-7) were on the tournament bubble after finishing third
in the competitive Golden Valley Conference, but played well enough
this fall to receive a playoff bid. The first-round matchup will be
one of extremes, with Taft being the most southerly team in the Northern
California bracket and COS the most northerly. Taft is located just
southeast of Bakersfield. The Eagles nearly faced the No. 4 seeded Cougars
at the San Jose Tournament of Champions on September 24th, but Taft
withdrew from their seventh-eighth place consolation game because of
a coaches family emergency.
"Traditionally they have been a very good team," Powers said.
"But they've not been as good in recent years and a lot of teams
have been able to play them."
Four Eagles make all-GVC
Four out of Siskiyous' six starters received all-GVC honors
last week.
Setter Deanna Kaniaupio and middle blocker Nicole Lucas each made the
first team, while outside hitter Shannon Richardson and defensive specialist
Megan Weil were honorable mention picks. All four players are freshmen.
Time and-a-half
Hard court double-duty continues for Powers, who enters his third decade
as COS women's basketball coach. As the volleyball season stretches
into the postseason, the basketball season is in its fourth week, meaning
a lot of time in the gym for Powers. "It's going to keep everybody
busy," Powers said. "A blowout trip." Powers will have
to juggle his schedule between the November 30th playoff game in Taft
with the basketball team's tournament in San Pablo, 300 miles to the
north. Should the Eagle volleyball team advance in the state tournament,
life gets more complicated for Powers, whose basketball team plays 12
games in December.
