Katie Pollak, right, makes a move to the basket with a hand in her face early in Saturday’s big win over Butte.

Over half the scoring output for the College of the Siskiyous women's basketball team comes from Butte and Yuba Counties. So when the team from their own backyard came to visit on Saturday night, three Eagle starters and the first player off the bench responded with strong performances.

The rest of the team got some payback too as COS (21-3, 4-2 Golden Valley Conference) routed Butte College 93-68. The GVC race got tighter last month when the Roadrunners routed the Eagles 71-45 in Oroville.

Chico natives Kristi Arness and Karlee Myers combined for 35 points for COS, with Arness sharpshooting her way to 18 points and Myers banging inside for 17.

“With Kristi and Karlee both being from Chico, they were a little tight the first time,” coach Tom Powers said. “This time I don't think nerves were as much a factor.”

The Eagles led viturally all game, but Butte pulled within six earlyin the second half. That's when COS responded with three consecutive 3-pointers and never looked back.

“It seemed like everything we tried worked,” Powers said. “And everything they did we had an answer for. It was a pretty fun game to watch.”

Siskiyous and Butte had been tied for second place in the GVC after both lost to first place Lassen. Now COS has the inside track on the conference's second state playoff bid with four regular season games to play.

Butte's 68-point output was the fewest for a COS opponent since early January.

“We've been giving up so many points; it was nice to hold down a team like Butte for 40 minutes,” Powers said.

Injured point guard Amanda Harris suited up and went through team warm-ups. The New Zealander has missed eight games since breaking her wrist on Jan. 5. COS has gone 6-2 in her absence after a 17-1 start. Powers said she will likely join the team during the playoffs.

The Eagles host College of the Redwoods on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to archrival Shasta College in Redding on Saturday night.

“We've got a pretty big weekend,” Powers said. “We only beat Redwoods by six over there, but hopefully we'll keep playing well at home.
