Wooly
Sunflower
Eriophyllum lanatum
Sunflower Family (Asteraceae)
Flower: Both the ray and disk flowers are yellow; one flower head on each flowering stalk
Blooms: May to August
Height: 1/2 to 3 feet
Leaves: Linear on upper stems, slender pinnately lobed leaves on lower portions of the stem
Stem: Well-branched clumps. Both stems and leaves may be covered with gray wooly hair. Some plants lack this gray wooly hair
Found: Common in many dry open places
Tidbits: The plant's hairs conserve water by reflecting heat and reducing air movement across the leaf's surface.
