If you find that all your answers match these, then your knowledge of and skills with adverb clauses are satisfactory.  Congratulations!

What if my answers to the sentence building exercises are incorrect?
If you find that some of your answers don't match these exactly, do not worry.  There are many ways to do these sentence combining exercises, some better than others.  Re-read the six qualities listed on p. 223: meaning, clarity, coherence, emphasis, conciseness, and rhythm.  If your sentences are different from the sentences below, check to see how your versions measure up to the qualities on p. 223.  As you look at your own answers, ask yourself the questions that you find with those six qualities.

  1. You can register for the course in demonology if you first obtain the permission of the professor.
  2. You can register for the course in demonology, but you must first obtain the permission of the professor.  (But is a coordinating conjunction, a.k.a. one of the fanboys, listed in Keywords #2.  The two clauses in this sentence are “coordinated.”)
  3. Cinderella left the reception early because she was tired.
  4. Wherever you go, I will follow.
  5. Although the forest looks peaceful, it supports incessant warfare.
  6. We gave away our dog so that we could get some sleep at night.

Answers will vary.
  1. It is unlikely that Cleopatra actually committed suicide with an asp because the species is unknown in Egypt.

  3. On a hot mid-August evening, my parents and I watched in awe as erratic bolts of lightning from a distant storm illuminated the sky.

  5. Although women are ill more frequently than men, they recover from illnesses more easily and more frequently than men.
