DIRECTIONS:
Combine the pairs of sentences below into a single sentence.  Convert the underlined clause into the structure given in parentheses; then determine if and where you need a comma.  Write the new sentences on a piece of paper.

  1. Johnny came marching home.  The war was over. (adverb clause)
  2. The dog walked past the butcher shop.  The dog began to drool.  (participle phrase)
  3. Georgia borrowed thirty dollars from Zack.  Zack does not expect that she will pay him back.  (coordination)
  4. Larry spent last month traveling through France with his aunt.  His aunt is a historian with expertise in European history.  (appositive)
  5. The classical pianist moved the audience to tears.  This pianist recently appeared on Great Performances.  (adjective clause)
