ART 3A - DESIGN I

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: D

Art 3A is a study of the elements and principles of design in contemporary society, as a foundation course for application in all subsequent art courses. Emphasis is placed upon structure, color study and compositional theory with media experimentation in two dimension.

ART 3B - DESIGN II

Art 3B is a study of applying basic design elements to three dimensional volumes, forms, and materials.

ART 4A-D - FUNDAMENTALS OF PAINTING

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

Instruction in use of oil, acrylics and water color techniques and styles of landscape, still life, figure and individual composition; emphasis in composition, techniques, equipment, theory, and mechanics of color, group, and individual problems are major parts of this course.

ART 6A - BEGINNING CERAMICS/POTTERY

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

An introduction to the history of ceramics including hand-building techniques utilizing pinch, coil, slab and mold methods of construction. Wheel throwing is also introduced along with glazing and other surface treatments.

ART 6B - INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS/POTTERY

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

Intermediate hand-building techniques and wheel-throwing problems. Extensive work on the potter's wheel and an introduction to kiln firing procedures are also covered.

ART 6C - ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS/POTTERY

 3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

Emphasis is placed on individual idea development. An introduction to glaze formulation and problem solving is also included.

ART 6D - ADVANCED CERAMICS

Kiln construction, wood, gas, or salt with an emphasis placed on student design.

ART 9A-D - DRAWING

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

This course includes drawing from landscape, still life and human figure. Media will include charcoal, ink, graphite, and pastel. Emphasis on the human figure for maximum improvement of hand-eye coordination and an understanding of compositional elements is also included.

ART 10A - BEGINNING SCULPTURE

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

An introduction to the history of sculpture, three-dimensional design awareness, and a variety of materials such as plaster, wood, cardboard, and metal.

ART 10B - INTERMEDIATE SCULPTURE

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

Intermediate design problems and idea development using clay and wood as the primary materials.

ART 10D - CREATIVE FURNITURE

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: F/S

A course in furniture construction, or reconstruction, using contemporary and historical materials and designs as a basis for hands on experience.

ART 11A - INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY

3 units, 5 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

A general education course introducing students to basic photographic techniques including camera handling, darkroom practices, and the history of photography. Hands on experience in the field and in the darkroom is stressed as the student prepares for mounting and display. Loaner cameras are available.

ART 11B - INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY

3 units, 5 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: S

Students will study advanced camera and darkroom techniques. Students will be introduced to large format photography, perspective controls, chemicals and materials, and the zone system and its variations. Lectures stress aesthetic developments in the history of photography. Small, medium and large format cameras are available on a loan basis.

ART 11D - INTRODUCTION TO COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY

3 units, 5 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: S

This course will intensely examine color negative material. Students will learn color controls for EP-2 and C-41 processes, additive and subtractive procedures, and will be required to make color separations.

ART 13A-D - PRINTMAKING

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU,UC)          Semester offered: F/S

This is an introductory course in printmaking. Techniques in silkscreen and woodblock, lithography, etching, and monotypes are taught.

ART 14C - GRAPHIC PROCESSES-ALTERNATIVE PHOTO PROCESSES

2 units, 3 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: D

A photo lab/lecture class using various techniques not in common use today, such as Platinum prints, Cyanotypes, Hand coloring, Kwick Print, etc. Hand applying the light sensitive photo emulsion will be stressed.

ART 16A-D - GALLERY AND MUSEUM APPRECIATION

This tour/study course will examine contemporary and historically significant art exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout Northern California and Southern Oregon.

ART 26A-D - LIFE DRAWING WORKSHOP

1 units, 36 hours T (AA,CSU,UC)       Semester offered: F/S

Concentrated study of the human figure and anatomy. Students will have the opportunity to draw live models in a variety of media including charcoal, pencil and pastel.

ART 31 - DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION


3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: S

Introduction to the principles of design as they relate to digital illustration and the creation of computer generated graphics for the microcomputer. Art and design principles, software, hardware and the creation of successful graphics in various formats will be examined. Adobe Illustrator will be used in designing and producing hard copy media. Two hours lab/week.

ART 32 - DIGITAL IMAGING

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: F/S

Introduction to the principles of design as they relate to digital imaging. Art and design principles, image file formats, and successful digital image-makingwill be examined. Adobe Photoshop will be used in designing and producing digital images. Two hours lab/week.

ART 33 - DIGITAL PUBLICATION DESIGN

 3 units,  6 hours (AA,CSU) Semester offered: S 

Introduction to the history and principles of design as they relate to digital desktop publishing. Art and design principles, file formats, and successful digital publishingwill be examined. Adobe InDesign will be used in designing and producing digital publications. Two hours lab/week.

ART 35 - WEB DESIGN

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: F

Introduction to the principles of design as they relate to Web publishing. Art and design principles, Web file formats, and successful Web graphics will be examined. Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash and Adobe Photoshop will be used in designing and producing Web sites. Two hours lab/week.

Required Prerequisite: Basic Macintosh or Windows skills. Advisory: CSCI 28A.

 

ART 36- WEB ANIMATION

3 units, 6 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: F

This course is designed for learning principles and techniques in designing animated Flash websites: how to lay out pages in Flash, use color and text effectively, work with multiple image types, build navigation in Flash, make Flash usable, and incorporate sound and video onto a website. Two hours lab/week

ART 41A-D - PAINTING

1 units, 3 hours (AA,CSU)             Semester offered: D

A course in the introduction to oil and acrylic methods and materials. Exploration of media, color theory and harmony, and demonstration of techniques and styles of painting.

ART 45A-D - INTRODUCTION TO COLLEGE ART WORKSHOP

.5 units, 18 hours T (AA,CSU)         Semester offered: SU

The Introduction to College Art course of study includes basic drawing and painting techniques. Work activities will be supported with lectures and visual materials emphasizing fine arts visual elements and design principles. All student work will be criticized and some will be displayed.
