Is an online course right for you?

Online courses are more convenient than traditional face-to-face courses, but they are usually more difficult and require more time and effort.  Since this class is complete in four weeks, you will probably not have the time to learn how to use the technology required for the online class.  You need to be ready to go on February 12th.  Also...

  • You must have a reliable internet connection and a backup plan just in case your first connection is not available.
  • You will be participating in class and submitting all assignments in writing.  You will need to know how to use your word processing program (especially the spell-check function) and you should feel comfortable expressing yourself in writing.
  • You should know how to use your internet browser program (Internet Explorer® or Netscape Navigator®) and be able to research information on the internet.
  • Please take the two "Online Readiness" assessments to help you decide if online instruction is really for you. The first assessment looks at your "student" skills, and the second assessment examines your technology skill level. If you have already decided to take an online class, you should review the "Online Survival Guide."

Course Information

  • Course requirements and grading are located on the Etudes course site.  You will need to be registered to access this information.  If you'd like this information before you register, please email the instructor Margie White, white@siskiyous.edu .

  • Dates: This course officially begins Oct. 19, 2005 and ends on Nov. 15, 2005.  Due to the short nature of this .5 credit class, late registrations will not be accepted after three days after the start date.  If you have registered for the class but have not emailed the instructor by the third day of class you may be dropped from the course.

  • Time Expectations:  Expect to spend approximately three hours per week over the four week period - a total of 12 hours.  You will be required to participate each week, you will not be able to complete the entire course in one week. This is not an independent-study class.  Lecture notes and assignments will be posted each week. You do have a choice as to the day and time during the week in which you choose to participate, however, you will have to submit your work each week if you want to pass the course.  Plan to be online at least twice per week to do the readings and complete assignments.

  • Textbooks:   No books are required for this course; a recommended resources list will be given in class.
