Lab 4 : Techniques in Biology
- See Lab 1 or Lab 2 for instructions on writing the lab reports and for the lab report template.
- The data sheets were handed out in lab and are not available online.
Theme: This lab explored a few basic techniques in biology, including chromatography and electrophoresis.
Questions to be addressed in the analysis and conclusion section:
1. Explain the general theory behind chromatography and electrophoresis.
2. Explain how chromatography and electrophoresis are similar and how they are different.
3. Explain what Rf values are, how they are determined and how they are useful.
4. How could you use these techniques for identification of substances? for isolation of substances?
Notes:
1. We wil not include either the dissecting microscope, the compound microscope or the data analysis in this lab report.
2. The last two pages of the lab handout should be removed from the
data sheets from the chromatography and electrophoresis and used in
Homework #3 (see main calendar).
