Principles of Biology : Laboratory
Lab 6 : Enzyme (Catalase)
Theme: The enzyme catalase from
potatoes can be used to study enzyme activity.
Materials and Methods:
Modified from "Biology Lab Manual" by The College Board, 2001.
pages 19-28. Specifically, drops of KMnO4 were recorded rather than
millimeters. Artificial baseline of 200 was chosen to make use of
class data.
Results: see lab book.

Analysis and Conclusion Section
[use class data for your graph on page 27 and the following
questions]
An introductory paragraph should include what catalase is, what
substrate it works on and what products are formed. It should also
state how the reaction was stopped and how this relates to the tertiary
structure of proteins. You should comment on the graph. What does the
graph demonstrate about enzyme action? [visit the data website above
for help on the graph and this question]
If your group's data was flat, you need to address this by making some
suggestions to improve the procedures or the materials used.
