Principles of Biology : Quiz
10 Study Guide
We will take Quiz 10 on Wednesday, October 29. I
recommend that you answer these questions yourself or with classmates.
This not a graded assignment, nothing is to be turned in. These
questions are just to help you prepare for this quiz.
Reading: You should read Chapter 8, up to page 160 (up to section 8.7)
and Chapter 10 up to Section 10.7 (page 197). Notice, we are skipping
chapter 9.
Also, you should be familiar with the photosynthesis
handout.
And the mitosis power point slide show from
lab (Wed. 10/22).
There are flashcards and animations on the Aris site you should study.

Questions to consider:
Photosynthesis
1) What is general equation of
all photosynthetic systems, bacterial
or eukaryotic, whether they oxidize water or hydrogen sulfide?
2) What is "cyclic photophosphorylation?" In whom does it occur? What
does it produce? What does it not produce that is needed for the
fixation of carbon?
3) What is "non-cyclic photophosphorylation?" In whom does it occur?
What does it produce?
4) Explain the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis. What two
photosystems are involved? How are they the same, how are they
different?
5) What happens in the light independent reactions of photosynthesis?
What are the reactants? What are the products?
6) What is the Calvin cycle? What is cycling? What is happening in one
crank of the cycle? Theoretically, in six cranks?
7) What is "photooxidation?" How have plants responded to the problem?
(this will be discussed briefly at the beginning of class, Monday).
Cell Division - Mitosis
8) What is "mitosis?"
9) What is the cell cycle? What are the stages in the cell cycle?
10) What are the three subdivisions of Interphase? What is happenning
during each of these subdivisions?
11) What are the four stages of meiosis (studied in lab, or the five
from the text) and what is happenning at each stage?
12) What is diploidy? haploidy?
13) What is the human karyotype? How many chromosomes are present?
14) What is a "chromasome?"
15) What is a "chromatid?"
16) What are centromeres?
17) What are centrioles?
18) What are histones? nucleosomes?
19) What is chromatin?
