Principles of Biology : Quiz 3 Study Guide
We will take Quiz 3 on Wednesday, Sept. 10. I
recommend that you answer these questions yourself or with classmates.
This not a graded assignment, nothing is to be turned in. These questions are just to help you prepare for this quiz.
Reading: Wikipedia article on the Carbon Cycle. You should also read
Chapter 2 in the text book on Basic Chemistry. Also, this quiz will
cover aspects of Lab 3.
Questions to be answered.
1) What is the difference between a "food chain" and a "food web?"
2) Explain the carbon cycle as an example of a biogeochemical cycle. (See the wikipedia article - link on the calendar page)
3) Distinguish between atoms and molecules.
4) What is an "element?" What is the elemental form of oxygen? nitrogen? hydrogen? carbon?
5) What is a molecule?
6) How are atoms in a molecule "hooked" together? Explain ionic and covalent bond?
7) What does it mean to say that a bond is "polar covalent?"
8) What does it mean to say that a molecule is "polar?"
9) What features of water make it an interesting liquid?
10) What is the pH scale? What does the pH number mean?
11) How is pH determined?
12) What are the names and symbols of the most common elements in the
human body? (You should be able to go back and forth between names and
symbols). You do not need to memorize who is on the list, except you
should know the top 5 or 6 most important.
13) What is an isotope?
14) What is "radioactivity?"
15) Of what practical value is the knowledge of radioactive isotopes?
16) What does "organic" mean to biochemists and chemists? What does this word mean in the food industry?
