Principles of Biology : Quiz 5 Study Guide

We will take Quiz 5 on Wednesday, Sept. 24. I recommend that you answer these questions yourself or with classmates. This not a graded assignment, nothing is to be turned in. These questions are just to help you prepare for this quiz.
Reading: You should read Chapter 4 in the text book on Cell Structure. Also, this quiz will cover some material from Lab 5 as indicated in the questions below.

There are flashcards and animations on the Aris site you should study.   Quick Link to the Aris Site.
Also, the cell images and animations on the yellowtang site are worthwhile.  See images and  animations on yellowtang.

Questions for this quiz.

1) What are the similarities and differences between "prokaryotic" and "eukaryotic" cells?
2) What is a "phopholipid bilayer?"
3) What are the components of the intermembrane system? Name them and give their function.
4) What do mitochondria and cholorplasts have in common as far as structure? function?
5) What is the "endosymbiotic theory" of the origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts? What is the evidence for this idea?
6) What is the cytoskeleton? What is it made of?
7) What are "molecular motors?" Give an example.
8) What are common extracellular structures in animals? plants?
9) What holds animals cells together?

Figures 4.6 and 4.7 are beautiful illustrations of typical cells. And Tables 4.2  and 4.3 should be studied as they summarize alot of material.

And from Lab 4:
1) What is an "isotonic" solution? "hypertonic?" "hypotonic?" Explain each of these terms.
2) What is "water potential?"
3) What is "plasmolysis?"
