Why
can't I save my data to the CD-ROM?
Your
CD-ROM is Read Only Media. This means that you can read the data on the CD or
even copy it to another form of media, but you cannot save anything to it.
How
should I go about saving the exercises that I complete?
You
should create a folder on your computer's Hard Drive called "Computer
Science" and put all of your completed exercises in there. As an
alternative, you could save them on "Floppy Diskettes", a
"CD-ROM" or on a "Zip Disk". Remember that the purpose of
saving these exercises is so you can send them to me as part of the Portfolio
you will be creating.
What
is a Portfolio?
The
Portfolio you will be creating during the semester will contain all of the
exercises you will be completing during the Summer
2003 semester. A listing of those exercises are listed
on the 'Calendar' portion of the class web page. You can also send this
Portfolio as an attachment to an E-Mail when it is due. Each exercise should
have your name on it, the chapter, and the exercise number. Make sure that the
Portfolio has the exercises in chronological order beginning with Chapter 1,
Exercise 1.
Can I
use the College's computer systems and labs to do my work?
YES!
Each on-line CSCI 1 student can receive his or her unique User ID and Password.
This will allow you to use either the Computer Lab on the Yreka campus to do
your class work. You will be able to use Office XP as well as make use of it's T-1 line to send and receive
all correspondence.
How do
I ask questions if I need help?
Let
me count the ways. You can e-mail me at graves@siskiyous.edu. You can call
me at 841-5504, or if I am not there leave a voice mail. You can visit me
during my office hours on the Yreka campus (refer to Course Outline).
How do
I take quizzes and exams?
All
three Quizzes, the Mid-Term, and the Final Exam will be taken on-line. Refer to
the Course Calendar for the dates these events will be posted to the web page.
Obviously these graded events are open book.
Why
does it take so long to download the Power Point presentations on my home
computer?
Each
chapter's presentation is memory intensive. Because of this, it will take much
more time to download on a conventional modem. Try going to the Yreka campus
and use the college's T-1 line to do downloads, you will be pleasantly
surprised.
Can I
share books with other on-line students or with someone else in the regular
class?
No
problem. It's up to you to work out the logistics of doing so. However, it is
your responsibility to ensure all of your assignments are sent to me on time.
These dates and times are not negotiable!
What
about grades?
I
know who you are and therefore what your Student Number is. I will post
your grades by Student Number on the 'Grades' web page after each graded event
is completed.
Can I
take this course if I do not have a computer?
Yes you can. It will be made more difficult in that you will have to use the
college's computers and it's Internet connection, but
it can be done. Remember, each of you will have a User ID and Password. You can
use the Computer Lab on the Yreka campus. When in Yreka, see me if you have
questions.
How do
I save my work if I am using the college's computers?
If
you are using one of the college's computers, save all of your work on either a
Floppy Diskette or a Zip Disk or on the 'H' Drive.
