Purpose and Content
Your purpose is to
present an extended analysis or response to works that you have
encountered this semester.
In this assignment you
will engage in a more detailed discussion of the writing of one author, the
writing of one era, writing that concerns a particular theme, or writing that
concerns one of the issues we have discussed this semester.
Here are some topic
possibilities:
- A detailed literary
analysis of one of the works' character, symbol, setting, point of view,
theme, etc. You may want to focus on one element within the work, or
you may want to show how the various elements work together to create the
whole.
- A detailed analysis
of a work of poetry, looking at the prosody, the imagery, the language, the
themes, the symbols, etc.
- An analysis of a
recurring theme or image in several works by the same author.
- An analysis of
several works by different authors that deal with the same issue.
- A feminist analysis
of a work.
- A Marxist analysis
of a work.
- A psychological
analysis of a work, using either Freudian theories, Jungian theories, or
Lacanian theories.
- An analysis of how
one work or several works reflect cultural/historical issues of the time.
