March
14
Here are the assignments for the week of March
29-21.
-
Complete the midterm exam. When you are finished
place it in my mailbox in the student center. Try not to take more
than two hours to write out the whole thing. If it takes you more
than two hours, you are working too hard.
-
Read the introduction to Thomas Hardy, p. 1916.
Then read "The Darkling Thrush," p. 1937, and "Channel Firing," p. 1944.
Then read any two or three other poems by Harding, your choice, whatever
catches your eye. (There are a number of nice little ditties in our
anthology.) If you've got time, I also recommend your reading his
prose piece "On the Western Circuit," p. 1918 (about 15 pages long).
-
Then go to the discussion board to answer some questions
and to join in a class discussion about Harding. Click HERE
to go to the Discussion Board.
I also recommend that during Spring Break (March
23 through APril 1) you spend some time reading Joseph Conrad's The
Heart of Darkness. You should have finished reading it by April
2 so that you can discuss it and explain to the class either why you think
it's so awful, why you think it's terrific, and what it reveals about the
waning English Empire. |
