ASSIGNMENTS
Response
Papers
Content
Your purpose is to present your reactions to the texts that
we have been studying.
Because this assignment is a short assignment, you won't have space
to discuss your reactions to all the readings; therefore I recommend focusing
on one or two works in particular (perhaps with a couple of references
to others).
Feel free to express your opinions:
-
Do you like or not like with the works? Why or why not?
-
Discuss the specific elements of the text that strike you.
-
Feel free to make connections between one text and another, between the
text and your lived experiences, between the text and what you have heard,
read, or seen in other classes or in other contexts. In other words,
what does the poem, story, or play remind you of?
-
As much as possible in those two pages, you should develop a full response
to the text.
The Technical Parameters
Please follow these guidelines:
-
Each response must fill 1½ to 2 pages, typed, double-spaced, using
one of the following fonts:
-
Courier New, size 12
-
Bookman, size 12
-
Arial, size 12
-
The page layout must follow MLA guidelines. Review
the sample on p. 733 of the Holt Handbook (6th edition). For
your convenience, you may use the template
for MLA Style.
-
All material that is borrowed from the text—whether quoted, paraphrased,
or summarized—must be documented appropriately following MLA guidelines.
Use parenthetical references rather than footnotes or end notes.
-
You do not need to include a "Work Cited" page if your only source is our
textbook. However, you must include a "Work Cited" page if
you refer to any sources other than our text.
Grading Criteria
Because the purpose of this assignment is to get you to articulate
your thoughts and your reactions to the readings, your papers will be graded
as follows.
-
Excellent—You have articulated a deep, thoughtful response.
You have analyzed what the authors say; you have made connections between
the texts; and you have made connections beyond the texts.
(Making "connections beyond the text" means that you have recognized connections
between the text and your lived experiences, between the text and what
you have heard, read, or seen in other classes or in other contexts.)
-
Good—You have articulated a thoughtful response. You have
analyzed what the authors say, and you have made connections between
the texts. (Making "connections between the text" means that you
have engaged in some comparing and contrasting of the ideas presented by
at least two of the authors.)
-
OK—You have written a so-so response. You have analyzed or
summarized a work or two from our text, but you haven't made any connections
between the two or beyond the text.
Those are the basic grading criteria. In addition to those, be aware
that errors in grammar and mechanics will lower your score. |
