Degree and Transfer Requirement Lecture
This is a difficult topic to explain in written form. There are so many variables that they can’t all be discussed. Plus, 90% of it wouldn’t apply to you. You will be making decisions as to whether you will get an Associates degree or a certificate. Whether you will transfer or not. What school you will transfer to. What major you will pursue. All of these decisions affect what classes you take. So, I will explain some, and you will go to some sites to help support what I have said. Then you will let me know if you have questions and we will discuss your individual situation.
First lets start off by saying that if you
are pursuing an Associates, Bachelors or any other college degree, you need
to complete your general education. This is a group of classes that is designed
to make you, “well rounded”.
Everyone
that receives a degree should know a little bit about history, a little bit
of science, a little bit about health, a little bit about the Arts and Humanities,
and have a solid base in Math, English, and Reading. That is general education.
Now, different schools determine for themselves what makes up this general education. So, depending on what you are going to do or where you are going, you will be taking certain general education classes.
The link below shows you what this is for our most frequented transfer schools as well as for an Associates Degree here at COS. Click on the link below and then select " GE patterns" from the list on the left.
If you are thinking about transfer to a California State school, look at the CSUGE. If you are thinking about a University, look at IGETC.

Now there is more to a degree or certificate than simply GE. You need to complete courses required for a major. That varies as much as the general education patterns you have just looked at. Fortunately for our discussion today, you take these classes at the transfer institution. BUT what you will need to take here is the Lower Division (that is classes taken as a Frosh or Soph) major requirements. These are classes they want you to have BEFORE you take the Upper division (classes you take as a Junior or Senior) major classes. Before you take a Psychological Evaluations class they want you to have taken Psychology 1. If you have not, the info in the class will be foreign to you. So, you need to get those classes out of the way here.
What are they?

It depends on your transfer school and your major.
You will need to see a counselor for that.
Below is another link that gives you all the contact sites for a number of colleges. Here is where you go to look at what other colleges have to offer, how much they cost, if they have your area of interest, and so on. Go to the link below, it is the same as before , but this time select "transfer colleges" from the list on the left.

I know that this can be confusing and that is fine. This is meant as an overview.
When you meet to discuss your future with your counselor, he/she will go over this again.
