Assignment 10

I would like you to respond to "ARTHUR CHICKERING'S SEVEN DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS".

Select one of the seven tasks that you do not currently possess and answer the following questions:

1. How will your experiences at college help you to develop a competency in one of these tasks. I am looking for specific experiences, not a general statement. You would have to start with a statement that deals with where you are now and then where you expect to go.

2. Do you believe that these experiences will have an impact on you? This is not just a yes or no answer. You must identify in what ways it will and it what ways it won't. Maybe it will be successful to a degree.

***Do not select a task that you have very little to say about. This will only negatively affect your grade.

Example:

2. MANAGING EMOTIONAL IMPULSES
Aggressive Impulses = the ability to redirect the negative emotions of anger and hatred in ways that are mature and nondestructive to self and others.

1. I come from a small town just north of Weed and as I enter college, I realize that I have a narrow view of the world. My experiences have been quite limited and I know that I will meet students from all over the country and maybe even all over the world. These people will bring their viewpoints with them and many will be in direct conflict with my personal take. In the past, I have been somewhat intolerant of other people who disagree with me. I might not say something to their faces, but I discount them as ignorant people. I wouldn't use the term hatred because I don't really even dislike them, I just know that they bring out in me "negative emotions". Rarely do I act upon these emotions. I might make a joke about them, or say something out loud, but that is rare. I thinking about the student who comes to Siskiyou County from out of the area and see the town and the people who grew up here as less that in touch than those from cities. They see us has hicks, or as if we all have a cowboy attitude about everything. So, I hope that college will help me to be a little more tolerant than I have been in the past. I see that this class has a diversity section that might be of assistance. I also think that simply by being in contact with so many other people who possess different views, that I will come to at least accept that we all think a little different. I imagine that I will be in classes that require group work. This will force me into overcoming some of these negative emotions in order to complete an assignment. I might join clubs and this will also force changes.

2. I believe that these experiences will have an impact on me, but I am not sure that I will be successful in the redirection of my negative emotions all the time. I have specific things that really bother me and even after I have finished college, I think they will still bring out the worst in me. Probably, I will become more tolerant. Probably I will become more worldly, and probably I will let less bother me, but that depends on the experiences I have. They could also make me more sure that other people are ignorant. Who knows. I guess the assignment just wants to know if I am open to change and hopeful that improvement will take place. Both of these questions I can answer Yes.
