Note-taking Lecture

Part II

Now that we have spent a week discussing the importance of note-taking, let's look at some possible methods for taking notes.

The three styles we will discuss are the Outline format, the Cornell format, and the Mapping format. There are many others, but for the purposes of this class, I just want you to become aware of these three.

First: The Outline Format.

Most of us use this form currently. It is effective, allows us to use abbreviations to keep up with the instructor, and generally has served us well. Click on this link to see a sample of the outline format and some information about using it.

Second: Cornell Format

The Cornell Format can be used in conjunction with mapping, outlining, or any other format. It divides the paper up to help organize your notes. Go to the link for more information.

Third: Mapping Format

This method is more effective in specific types of classes or for specific types of lectures. In can be incorporated with other styles as well. Check it out.
