Response 8: The Renaissance (Italy and the North)

1. Humanism and Neoplatonism were the dominant philosophies of this period. How do these philosophies compare to neoclassic philosophies of the 18^th century?

2. The painters of this era were responsible for major innovations in technique and style. Describe two innovations using specific paintings.

3. What are the similarities between the Shakespearean and Petrarchan sonnet? Which do you prefer, and why?

4. Take a look at The Book of the Courtier, by Baldassare Castiglione. What would you have to do in your current life in order to fulfill these requirements? If you are a woman, see page 192, and ask the same question.

5. Choose one of the major cities of the Renaissance: Florence, Rome, Venice, Brughes, Ghent, London, or Paris, and find out what life was like during this time period. What do you think your life would be like if you lived in this era?

6. Examine the history of the with-hunt in the 16^th century. Begin with pg. 223 of our text, then branch out into the internet. What are your thoughts
