Solving an inequality is similar to solving an equation.

Remember,

When solving an equation for a variable,

You can simplify any expression or part of an expression any time you want.

You can choose any number or expression and add, subtract, multiply, or divide it on both sides of the equation; the “equal” will still be the same.

When solving an inequality for a variable,

You can simplify one whole side, part of one side, or both sides of the inequality any time you want.

You can choose any number or expression and add, subtract, multiply, or divide it on both sides of the inequality; the “unequal” will still be the same.
