. You will need the software access
code from www.hawkeslearning.com to enter the gradebook. Read the “Student getting started directions”
at www.hawkeslearning.com .
.
Course Objectives:
1. Solve problems involving whole numbers,
fractions, decimals, proportions, ratios and percentages.
2. Demonstrate knowledge and use of geometric
and algebraic symbolism.
3. Demonstrate techniques in solving problems.
4. Be aware of your thinking process to the
point where you know when an answer is reasonable,
know the general form of an answer and can
supply reasons for each step of a worked problem.
Grades: Grades will be determined by total points
earned from certificates, tests and the final exam according to the table
below.

Certificates (drop 4) 30%

The Course: This is a mixture of an
on-line/traditional/independent study course.
There will be no formal “lectures” and no “textbook”. The Hawkes software will serve as our
textbook. Hawkes software contains lessons, video and audio, which will help
you study and learn. You will complete
certifications in each section using the Hawkes software. The software will work in the
Technical Help: The
installation is straight forward, but pop-up blockers can create problems when
connecting to the internet. The software
uses internet Explorer and other browsers may not support this
application. See http://www.quantsystems.com/Downloads/Docs/HLS%20Access%20to%20Internet.pdf and the FAQ section on the right column
at www.hawkeslearning.com or go to their
on-line support section. Hawkes Technical Support
team is also available by phone at 843-571-2825 from 8:30am - 5:30pm Eastern Time, Monday through
Friday. They will not answer questions about math, only your computer and
software problems.
E-mail; We
will be using the message feature on the Hawkes grade book system at www.hawkeslearning.com/siskiyousbam
. Please check your software messages
often. You may also e-mail me at odegard@siskiyous.edu . Please write
“Math81” on the subject line so I know it is not spam.
Phone: Feel free to call my office at 938-5267 if you want to discuss your progress
or ask questions about the material. If
I’m not in, leave a message. Be sure to
include your name and daytime phone number.
Give your number slowly so I can hear you. The math lab is also available by phone
at 938-5365. Ask for
Attendance; Attendance is not required. Tests will be given on Tuesdays from 1-1:50pm
in Greenshields Room 2. You do not need
to come to class unless you are ready to take a test or need help with
software. All tests must be completed,
however, by 12/14/07 and students who do not make significant progress in the
course may be dropped.
Certificates: : There are 62
certificate lessons assigned. The lowest
4 will be dropped. Certificates count as
30% of your grade. See our gradebook
at www.hawkeslearning.com/siskiyousbam
for assignments. Once you are certified
in a particular section, the software will give you a certification code. It’s your proof you did your homework, so
save, write or print a copy of all certification codes as you earn them. YOU
must then register each certification code on-line at www.hawkeslearning.com/siskiyousbam before midnight 12/14/07 Pacific time zone
. It’s your responsibility to register
certifications on time in spite of unforeseen computer failures and/or network
problems. Work ahead. Late certificate registrations are penalized
20% for one day late, 50% for up to 2 days late and 100% for over two days
late. So a certification registered
after midnight 12/16/07 would earn 0
points.
Tests: There will be 5 in-class tests. The lowest
score will be dropped. The tests count
collectively as 50% of your grade.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and is
scheduled for Tuesday 5/20 from 1-3pm.
It counts as 20% of your grade.
Getting Started: Go directly to www.hawkeslearning.com and select “How to get started” and “get and
access code” .
Discussion Board: We will be using the message
system on the Hawkes gradebook at www.hawkeslearning.com/siskiyousbam
as our discussion board. Please feel
free to message me anytime.
Cheating: Cheating includes but is not limited to
working certification problems for others,
copying or allowing someone else to copy on tests, glancing at another
person’s test, using calculators on a “No Calculator” test, or tampering with
the on-line grade book. Students who
cheat will receive an F for the course.
Barring: If you repeatedly try to register a bogus
certification code you will be barred
from registering. Notify me and I will
remove your barring during my normal working hours.
Withdrawals:
The last day to drop is April 25, 2008.
You must fill out and return the appropriate paperwork in the Weed
campus registrar’s office. Call Admissions and Records, 530-938-5272 for
information.
Incompletes: Incompletes are given only in the case of
critical illness and/or family tragedy after the last day to drop. Students must be passing and have completed
70% of the course when an incomplete is issued.
Calculators: Calculators are not allowed on tests
therefore you should avoid using calculators on the homework over those
chapters.
Accommodations; Students
with special needs should contact DSP&Ss in Eddy Hall 1 on the Weed Campus
or phone Linda at 530-938-5818.

Math Lab
Information
The Math Lab is located in
the mezzanine on the south wing of the
Every math class has a
“support hour” automatically attached to it.
A support hour for a math class means a student is expected to spend at
least one hour per week (16 hours minimum/34 hours maximum per semester) outside
of class in the math lab. The time you
spend in the math lab is recorded and given to your instructor at the end of
each semester.
The purpose of the math lab
is to provide extra support for students needed help for their classes and is
also a great place to meet and work problems with other students and
instructors. There is always at least
one instructor and usually a few student tutors present during the lab’s hours
of operation.
To use the math lab as your
support hour, you must do the following:
v
Be enrolled in a
math class
v
Logon to the
timekeeper for every minute your are using the lab
v
Selected a
desired support hour on the timekeeper
v
Logout of the
timekeeper when you finish your time in the lab
Yes, just as with the
computer lab you must register the hour you think you will be using the math
lab. But you can use the lab anytime it
is open; just remember to logon/logoff on the timekeeper. This is very important since this may have a
direct correlation to the continued funding of the math lab.
In addition to the support
hour, a student could enroll in Math 70A, 70B, 70C, or 70D and receive 0.5
credits. Each of these, starting first
with Math 70A, allows a student to gain another 54 hours of help in the lab. These classes may be added throughout the
semester as needed and would only be used once your maximum of 34 hours for the
support hour has been reached.
