Learning Outcomes:
This course explores theories and principles of effective group communication while providing opportunities to apply newly acquired knowledge to practical group situations. Specific attention is given to basic group concepts, interaction skills, and the acquisition of methods and tools for achieving group goals. Student outcomes will include the following:
- Demonstrated familiarity with basic theories and principles of small group communication, small group formation and developmental stages, and effective group participation.
- Practical application of interaction skills, with demonstrable competency in the areas of listening ability, communication confidence, and strategies for expressing differences and managing conflict.
- Ability to work with others to achieve group goals, including the ability to act as either a competent and reliable group leader or group member, participation in group decision making and problem solving, and the ability to
accomplish a satisfactory group project.
- Ability to conduct research and share information, to plan and conduct meetings, including setting an agenda and recording minutes, and the ability to make presentations in groups.
This course will be offered two different ways in the Spring 2008 semester. One section of the course will be offered as a traditional, face-to-face class and the other section as an online class. In order to take the online class, students must have regular and reliable access to the internet. Both the online and traditional class will begin on January 15, 2008 and will finish on May 22.
The online class will have one scheduled Saturday meeting near the end of the semester for group presentations. You must attend in person or make special arrangements with the instructor.
Assigned textbook reading: Working in Groups, 4th Edition; by Isa N. Engleberg and Diana R. Wynn; 2007; Houghton Mifflin: Boston. The textbook may be purchased through the Weed campus bookstore or through online retailers.
