Commencement Night
On the night of Commencement, May 15, 2009 we will line up at 7:30 pm
SHARP on the sidewalk immediately south of Greenshields Hall and march
in PROMPTLY at 8 pm. We ALWAYS start on time. The Commencement will take
approximately one hour. There will be a special reception for graduates
and their guests in the Student Center immediately following the ceremony.
Fees
There is a $15 fee to rent your gown and to receive a cap, tassel and
diploma cover for you to keep. The fee is paid to the Cashier PRIOR to
picking up the cap and gown. Please bring your receipt with you when you
pick up your cap and gown from the COS Campus Gift and Book Shop. Payments will be accepted
beginning Friday, April 24th.
Commencement Practice
It is VERY important for you attend the commencement practice. It will
be held: Thursday, May 14th at 3 p.m. on the sidewalk south of Greenshields
Hall. Please contact Jan Keen if you cannot attend the practice and plan
to be in the commencement ceremony. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ATTEND
THE PRACTICE!
Seating
There will be reserved, unassigned seating available in the gym for the
family and guests of graduates on the night of Commencement until 7:45
p.m. When you pay the $15 graduation fee to the cashier you will receive
five (5) tickets. If you need additional tickets, please contact Jan Keen
in the Student Services Office. (Note: Graduates participating in the
ceremony do not need a ticket.) There is open seating after 7:45.
Cap and Gown
To participate in the Commencement, you MUST wear a cap and gown (see
"Fees"). Caps and gowns will be available in the
Campus Gift and Book Shop, beginning Friday, April 24th. Caps and gowns should be picked
up no later than 4 p.m. on Monday, May 11th. You will receive your tassel
at graduation practice. The gowns (you keep your cap and tassel) must be returned immediately
following the Commencement Exercises. Students will be available in the
Student Center for gown check-in at that time.
Pictures
There will be caps and gowns available for the pictures if you are not
participating in the commencement exercise and would still like your photo
taken. These services will be provided by Impressions Photography (aka Boss Photo).
The pictures will be taken outside, behind the COS Library, from 5:30p.m.
to 7:15 p.m. on the night of graduation. Be sure to bring the envelope and
payment with you at the time of the shoot. You may get an envelope from
Jan Keen in the Student Services Office. Impressions Photography has made this package
very affordable and of good quality for the students. This is a great
opportunity to document your graduation from COS!
Graduation Announcements
The COS Campus Book and Gift Shop has graduation announcements available at a very reasonable price.
Disability Accommodations
If you need special accommodations for the commencement exercises because
of a disability, or if someone you know is attending and needs accommodations,
please call the Learning Services office at 938-5297.
When will my name be in the local paper? Sometime
in June. ( You must have marked "Yes" on your petition for media
release.)
What if I am shy a couple of units? If you are
short 3 units or less you may walk if you are registered to complete them
during the summer term.
Why is Graduation on the Friday before
finals? Because students finish finals at different times during the
last week of school and some need to leave the area as soon as they have
finished their last final. We want to make sure that everyone has the
opportunity to participate.
What if I walk and then fail? What then?
You won't receive your diploma. You are only a "candidate" for
graduation when you participate in the commencement exercises.
How do I apply? When is the deadline? You
complete a "Petition to Graduate" available online or at the admissions
office. It is recommended that you submit your petition after registering
for your spring classes. The earlier the better! (Deadline for submission
is April 3, 2009). Late petitions will result in your name not being listed
in the program (printing deadlines).
After I submit my petition, when will I receive
graduation information? If you don't receive information by April
13th , contact Jan Keen in Student Services.
When will I get my Diploma? Sometime in
late July.
Questions? If you have questions, please
contact Jan Keen or Robin Richards in the Student Services Office at 938-5374.
