The Natural Resources program provides students with education and hands-on training to equip them with the skills needed for a job and/or career in environmental resources management.

Job Skills

  1. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of Natural Resource Management.
  2. Learn use of topographic maps, survey instruments, compass, aerial photos, GIS and GPS.
  3. Collect data for wildlife and stream surveys, timber inventories, ecosystem analysis, and other resource inventories.
  4. Identify tree species and associated understory for western, coniferous forests.

Program Requirements

General Description
The Natural Resources course of study is designed for the individual who enjoys a broad undersanding of the science and technical skills needed to manage the natural resources of the forested environment.  A Natural Resource Technician is trained to work and navigate year-round, while collecting natural resource information for management and/or research purposes. This program also prepares students to transfer to a four-year university to complete a Baccalaureate degree.

Natural Resources Technician 28.5 units

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify tree species and associated understory for west coast, coniferous forests.
  2. Exhibit proficiency in both inventory and timber sale cruises, using measurement instruments such as a prism, biltmore stick, clinometer, and, relaskop.
  3. Navigate in the wildland using a compass, topographic map, aerial photos and GPS
  4. Work safely and effectively both independently, as well as, on a crew.
  5. Collect and analyze data for wildlife and stream surveys, timber inventory, harvest systems and other resource inventories.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency with data recorders and computer data input and processing using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), standard cruise programs and computer databases/ spreadsheets.
