CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant)

The Certified Nurse Assistant program is a 180-hour course offering theory and clinical experience for students to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for state certification examinations.

Certificate: Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) (6 units)

Prerequisites for Admission:

• Fingerprinting and drug screening.
• Must be at least 16 years of age by the time of the certification exam.
• Pass a physical exam and complete required immunizations.
• Furnish transportation to and from the clinical sites.

Advisory:
1. READ 62 or qualification through assessment
2. ENGL 96 or qualification through assessment

Students must demonstrate English comprehension at the sixth grade level or higher.

Expenses: books, uniforms, white shoes, watch with a second hand, stethoscope, malpractice insurance, immunizations, physical examination, exam and licensure fees.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the state exam for CNA.

Vocational Nursing Program

The three-semester Vocational Nursing program is designed to prepare the student for beginning practice in nursing care. Theory content provides each student with a basic understanding of the roles and responsibilities of vocational nurses in providing health care to all age groups. After course completion and licensure, students are prepared to function completely and skillfully in a wide variety of health care settings.

Certificate: Vocational Nursing (53 units)

Prerequisites for Admission:

• Eligibility for MATH 54A or MATH 56 by either successfully completing MATH 81 or through the assessment process.
• Completion of ENGL 52 or higher or through the writing assessment process with a score of 65 or above.
• Transcripts
• Must be at least 17 years of age by the time of the licensure exam.
• High school diploma (or GED or equivalent) or Associate Degree.
• Completion of Human Biology (BIO 5) or Human Anatomy (BIO 12A) with a C grade or better. (Please note: This prerequisite will change beginning with the August 2010 class. It will be Anatomy, BIO 12A, exclusively.)
• Completion of Nutrition (FCS 11) with a C grade or better within the past five years.
• Completion of Medical Terminology (OA 45) with a C grade or better.
• Pass a physical exam and complete required immunizations.
• Background check and drug screening prior to the start of the program.
• Completion of a Transcript Evaluation Form by Counseling Services if any of the prerequisite classes have been taken at any other college other than College of the Siskiyous.
• Must be able to provide own transportation to and from clinical facilities.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Board Examination. A passing score entitles you to become an LVN. In order to take the NCLEX exam, students must possess a U.S. Social Security card.

LVN to RN Step Up

The LVN to RN Step-Up program gives Licensed Vocational Nurses the opportunity to step up to Registered Nurse in two semesters. Instruction takes place using a state-of-the-art simulation lab. Students also receive hands-on community and clinical experience.

Prerequisites for Admission:

1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Graduate of an approved vocational nursing program or the equivalent as determined by
the school.
3. Proof of clear and active LVN license (copy).
4. Transcript evaluation.
5. Drug screening and background check prior to the start of the program.
6. Pre-admission academic testing.
7. Completion of the following classes with an overall grade point average of 2.5 with no grade less than a "C" for each course, and no more than one repetition of any of these courses:

• Human Anatomy (BIO 12A)
• Human Physiology (BIO 12B)
• Microbiology (BIO 6)
• College Composition (ENGL 1A)

8. Pass a physical exam and complete required immunizations.

Sociology (SOC 1A or SOC 1B)
Psychology (PSY 1 or PSY 33)
Speech (SPCH 1, SPCH 2, or SPCH 3)
Mathematics - one AA degree general education course
Arts & Humanities - one IGETC Area 3 Arts and Humanities course
Diversity - enrollment and completion of ADN (LVN-RN Step-Up) program completes this requirement.
PE/Wellness - enrollment and completion of ADN (LVN-RN Step-Up) program meets one (1) unit of this two-unit requirement.
Reading (READ 10 with a C grade or better OR score of 90 or higher on the reading portion of the COMPASS assessment.)

** These classes must be completed prior to enrollment in NURS 31 and NURS 32 .

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive an Associate of Science degree in Nursing and be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination - Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN).

Associate Degree Major: Vocational Nursing

**Please note: This prerequisite will change beginning with the August 2010 class. It will be Anatomy, BIO 12A, exclusively.

For an Associate Degree Major, students must also complete general education requirements. Please refer to the Associate Degree general education requirements in the Schedule of Classes for a list of acceptable courses. Make an appointment with a COS counselor for assistance in completing the general education requirements.

Associate Degree Major: LVN-RN Step Up

Students must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 for Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and the Microbiology courses with no grade less than a "C" for each course. One repetition of one of these sciences courses is allowed, ONLY if the first attempt is a substandard grade (D, F, FW).

For an Associate Degree in Nursing, students must also complete the general education requirements specific to the nursing program. Please refer to the above list or make an appointment with a COS counselor or advisor for assistance in completing the general education requirements.

Transfer and Challenge Procedure:
Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and other health care workers may be eligible to obtain placement in the nursing program on a space available basis through challenge exams, portfolio assessment, and credit for equivalent courses. Qualified applicants must meet all prerequisite requirements and have successfully completed previous nursing or health education course work, such as Licensed Vocational Nurses, Licensed Psychiatric Technicians, Armed Services Medical Personnel, or students who have successfully completed a portion of a nursing program which would lead to Registered Nurse licensure.
