Set up with DSS
|
High Tech CenterAssisted Computer TechnologyThe COS High Tech Center, located in Eddy Hall 2 (between the DSS and EOPS offices) is available to provide computer access and technology to students with disabilities to help educate and prepare them for today's work force. The High Tech Center staff provides various services to students with disabilities including production of alternative text materials, access to screen readers for the blind, speech synthesizers, voice recognition software, screen magnification software, and training in basic computer and keyboarding skills to prepare students for mainstream courses. The HTC staff also provides training and ongoing support for students to get the most from the assistive technology and alternate text materials provided for them.
Welcome to the High Tech Center. We want you to know what is expected in our computer-assisted instruction lab for students with disabilities. If you fulfill these expectations, we will do everything we can to assist you in finding success in your academic and career goals.
1. Arrive on time for your appointment at the HTC, sign in and out on the Sign-In Sheet AND the Timekeeper. This is the only way you will be credited for your time. Start independently on your program if possible. 2. The computers at the High Tech Center are only for students referred by Disabled Student Services. Students can have a tutor with them if needed. 3. Work only in programs you are assigned or discuss new ones with the High Tech Center Staff. Do not make program changes independently. 4. Do not use Dragon Naturally Speaking unless you have been trained and qualified by High Tech Center Staff. 5. Like the rest of the College, we work on a 50 minute hour. Please end your program and exit prior to the beginning of an hour so the next student can begin promptly on the hour. 6. Please be courteous and patient with everyone in the lab. This means keeping your voice down to a near-whisper and not interrupting others, using head-phones when listening to audio programs, and keeping bags, feet and other personal items under your desk. 7. You must attend regularly in order to receive credit. For every 1/2 unit of credit you must attend at least 28 hours of the 54 possible. You are finished when you have reached the number of hours required for the unit(s) for which you are enrolled. You may add additional time by enrolling for another 1/2 unit. 8. Do not bring food or drinks into the lab. The ONLY exception is a closed-top water bottle. 9. Since some of the people using the HTC have chemical allergies, it is important to be considerate of all and not wear strong scented products (perfumes, colognes, after-shaves, hand or body lotions) in the lab. 10. If you experience any problems, please contact an HTC staff member.
