HOW TO ACCESS THE ONLINE SYSTEM

It is available on the World Wide Web at http://www.siskiyous.edu/library WHAT IS IT?
The COS Library online system allows you to search the COS library catalog for holdings of books, magazines, newspapers, reserve textbooks and materials, college catalogs, audio/video materials and computer software.
It also allows you to:
· Renew materials
· Place requests
· View materials checked out and their due dates
· View fines owed

TERMS TO BE FAMILIAR WITH


User ID - the 14 digit barcode number found on the back of your library card.
Alt ID - your last name and first letter of your first name in CAPITAL LETTERS (example: SMITHJ for John Smith). Sometimes the first 2 letters of your first name are required.
PIN - (Personal Identification Number) issued at the time you received your library card. It is a 4-5 digit number or word. You will need your PIN to access your library records, place a hold, or place a request.

CHECK YOUR LIBRARY RECORDS

1. Click on Catalog.
2. Click on User Services.
3. Click on User Status Inquiry.
4. Enter your User ID (OR) Alt ID.
5. Enter your PIN number in the PIN field.
6. Click on Display User Information.
7. The next screen will give you access to your own checkouts, holds, bills, messages, etc.
8. When you are finished, to maintain security, click on Exit.

FIND RESERVE TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS


The system's Reserve Desk accesses a collection of textbooks and other materials which instructors have set aside for special, limited-time usage. Access them as follows:
1. Click on Catalog.
2. Click on Reserve Desk.
3. Type in the instructor's last name. Press Enter.
4. Click on your instructor's name from the list.
5. Click on the course you want.
6. Give a library staff member the course number and the title of the reserve item you wish to use.

RENEW YOUR LIBRARY MATERIALS


Materials must be renewed one day PRIOR to the due date. Don't wait until the day they are due or you will need to bring the materials to the library for renewal. Most library materials can be renewed two consecutive times, unless another user has requested them and placed a hold.
1. Click on Catalog.
2. Click on User Services.
3. Click on Renew Materials.
4. Enter your User ID (OR) Alt ID .
5. Enter your PIN number .
6. Click on List Charged Items.
7. Click on checkboxes next to materials you wish to renew.
8. Click on Renew Selected Items.
9. When you are finished, to maintain security, click on Exit.

CHANGE YOUR PIN NUMBER

If you wish to change your PIN number, follow these steps:
1. Click on Catalog.
2. Click on User Services.
3. Click on User PIN Change.
4. Enter your User ID (OR) Alt ID.
5. Enter your current PIN number.
6. Use "Tab" to move to the Enter new PIN field and type in the new PIN number of your choice.It can consist of 4-5 numbers or letters. Do not use spaces or special characters like question marks, carets, etc.
7. Enter the new PIN number a second time.
8. Click on Change PIN.
9. When you are finished, to maintain security, click on Exit.

PLACE A HOLD ON LIBRARY MATERIALS

If a particular item is currently checked out, you may place a hold on it. When the item is returned to the library, you will be notified that it is being held for you at the circulation desk.
In order to place a hold on a particular item, locate the full record of the item in the catalog first.
1. Click on Catalog.
2. Click on the Request button at the top of the screen.
3. Click on Place Holds.
4. Enter the appropriate information in the Creating New Request screen. You must enter your User ID (OR) Alt ID. The system remembers the call number and item ID number of the item you want.
5. Click on Place Request.
6. The system confirms that the hold has been placed.
7. When you are finished, to maintain security, click on Exit.

To check on the status of your hold:

1. Click on Catalog.
2. Click on User Services from the first catalog screen.
3. Click on User Status Inquiry.
4. Type in your User ID (OR) Alt ID and your PIN number. Click Display User Information.
5. Click on the icon for Requests/ Library Messages to check on the current status of your hold request.
6. When you are finished, to maintain security, click on Exit.
