*Non-Student MinorsPOLICY ON LIBRARY ACCESS BY NON-STUDENT* MINOR CHILDRENIntroductionCollege of the Siskiyous Library collections and services are provided primarily to support the classes and programs of the college. The college, which serves adult students, and the California Education Code recognize that some course topics may not be appropriate for minors, and it follows that COS Library collections and online resources, such as the Internet, may include topics not appropriate for minors. Since college policy and the California Education Code require parental permission for minors under the age of 18 to enroll in a college class, the COS Library will exercise similar restrictions on access to its collections and online resources. PolicyUnassisted use of the COS Library's collections and online resources by non-student minors under the age of 18, and not accompanied by an adult, is prohibited without written permission of a parent or legal guardian. Use of COS Library facilities for independent study is not restricted. Research assistance by COS Library staff will be provided to non-student minors under the age of 18 who visit the library unaccompanied by an adult. The library staff member will exercise the right to select appropriate materials from the collections or online resources. Non-student minors under the age of 18 who visit the library accompanied by an adult over 18 years of age are assumed to be under adult supervision and may fully use the Library's collections and online resources. Community borrowing privileges (library cards) will be extended to non-student minors under the age of 18 with written permission from a parent or legal guardian. Minors under the age of 18 who are currently enrolled in a College of the Siskiyous class will be deemed to have obtained parental permission to have full student access to all library resources and services by virtue of the College's Special Admission Permit for Students. Participants in the Upward Bound Program also receive parental permission and are allowed library access as a part of that program. Minors wishing to use the collections or online resources of the COS Library may be asked to show identification so that library staff may ascertain whether the necessary permission noted above has been obtained. When using the COS library, community visitors will observe College policies, including the COS Student Code of Conduct, Internet Use Policy (Word document) and library guidelines on Internet use. Any questions or exceptions to this policy may be made to the Library Director. * "Non-student" means not currently enrolled in a College of the Siskiyous class. Rev. 4/19/2000
