The Navigator portal is your one-stop location for COS information. Navigator is where you apply for admission, register for classes (go to the Student tab once you've logged in), check on the status of your classes and grades, access your COS student email account, and more. Student email FAQs

When you register for or are waitlisted for a class at COS, you will automatically be provided with an email address, which will be available for use within 24 hours. This email account is used for all official communications from the College, so please be sure to check it regularly or have it forwarded to an account you check often. For more information about waitlisting, see our Waitlist Procedure page.

The default initial password for student’s email is their 6 digit date of birth, plus the lower-case letters “em” (for email) MMDDYYem.

If you do not know your password or need to have your password reset, please contact the Student Help Desk for assistance. Email emailsupport@siskiyous.edu, being sure to include your name, date of birth, and last 4 digits of your SSN, or call us at (530) 938-5523.

How do I log in to the portal?
Log in to the portal with your User Name and your 6-digit birthdate (mmddyy) as your initial Password. You will immediately be prompted to change your password and set two security questions. Once you have gone through this process, you will always be able to get your password if you have forgotten it by choosing "Forgot Password?" from the portal login screen.

If you have never been a student at COS, click on the Apply Now button from the main COS home page or the words Apply Now on any other page and complete the form for attending COS. This will allow you to receive your COS Student ID number, as well as your User Name for logging into Navigator.

Please be aware that you can NOT log in to this portal with your Student ID (S#). See the answer to the next question for how to find your User Name if you know your S#.

What if I don't know my User Name or Password?

From the Navigator login page, click on the Forgot Password? link. Enter your User Name, and then answer at least one of your security questions. if you are not sure of your User Name, e-mail your name, date of birth, and last 4 digits of your SSN, listing an e-mail address COS has on record for you, to Navigator Help or call (530) 938-5523.

Do I need to use a particular browser for Navigator to work properly?
To log in and use the system effectively, you should be using the latest version of one of the following Internet browsers:

  • Windows
    Internet Explorer
    FireFox
    Safari
  • Macintosh
    Firefox

If you are trying to log in to the system using another browser, you may experience difficulties.

How do I get rid of the security message that always pops up?
If you are being prompted to allow non-secure content, choose the option to allow it so you will be able to see items in the portal that are brought in from other sources. In Internet Explorer, if you would like to disable this prompt, go to Tools> Internet Options> Security> Custom Level> Display and select Mixed Content:Enable.

Can I use the e-mail icon at the top of the page to access my staff e-mail account?
This icon is only for student e-mail accounts (in the format of username@ins.siskiyous.edu). To access siskiyous.edu e-mail addresses from within Navigator, use the "Employee E-mail Access" link on the Home tab. If you are not yet logged in to Navigator, you can get to your staff e-mail via the "Employee E-mail Access" link on the Navigator login page, http://www.siskiyous.edu/navigator/.

Can I change my User Name?
No. Your User Name is set when you first register for classes and the same User Name stays with you for as long as you are a student at College of the Siskiyous.

Where can I get help?
If you are having trouble logging in to Navigator, send your name, date of birth, and last 4 digits of your SSN to Navigator Help from an email address the school has on file for you, and we will send your User Name and password. You can also call (530) 938-5523, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday through Thursday.

What is my COS Student email address?
Your COS student email address will be your Navigator username, followed by @ins.siskiyous.edu: username@ins.siskiyous.edu

How do I start using my new email account?
COS uses Microsoft Office 365 for student email and Office Web Applications. You can log on to the full Office 365 portal at: https://portal.office.com which includes the Outlook Web App, 25 Gb of storage on Microsoft OneDrive, and much more. Once you have logged in, click on the Outlook App to use email. You can log on directly to the Outlook email web interface here at https://outlook.office365.com/owa/. You will also find an email optionletter iconin the top right hand corner of Navigator once you have logged in. Clicking on that link will open up a splash page with a link to your email web interface. If you are having trouble with your student e-mail account please send an e-mail to emailsupport@siskiyous.edu from your personal email address and be sure to include your name, date of birth, and last 4 digits of your SSN, or call us at (530) 938-5523.

How do I forward my COS email to another email address?
If you wish to have your student email forwarded to another address, log in to your student email account in Office 365. Make sure you are in the Outlook Web email portion of Office 365 by clicking on the Outlook tab. When you are in Outlook, there will be a small white triangle below the word Outlook, see the example picture below:Office365_outlookTab

Then click on the Settings (gear) icon in the upper right corner, then go to Options. The Options column should apprear on the left side of the window. Scroll down and you should see 'Forwarding' under the Accounts heading. Click on 'Forwarding', Enter the email address you wish to have your student account forwarded to in the field, then click on Start Forwarding and then Save.Office 365 Forwarding



To stop forwarding your student email, simply go back to the same page and click on Stop Forwarding and Save.

Please remember that your ins.siskiyous.edu account provided by College of the Siskiyous is the account to which we will be sending all student correspondence. It will be your responsibility to maintain both accounts should there be any changes in the future.

Can I log into my COS email account without going through Navigator?
Yes, you can log on to the full Office 365 portal at: https://portal.office.com which includes the Outlook Web App, 25 Gb of storage on Microsoft OneDrive, and much more. Once you have logged in, click on the Outlook App to use email. You can log on directly to your email web interface at https://outlook.office365.com/owa/.

  • Log in with your full COS student email address. Your COS student email address will be your Navigator username, followed by @ins.siskiyous.edu: username@ins.siskiyous.edu
  • If this is the first time you are logging in to email, use your 6 digit birthdate followed by the letters 'em' as your password. For example 051388em for someone born on May 13th, 1988. After you first log in, it should prompt you to change your password.
  • If you had already set up your email, use the password that you created when you first set up your email.
  • If you are unable to login and need assistance, please send an email from your personal email account to emailsupport@siskiyous.edu. Include in the email your name, COS Navigator username, explanation of the problem and one of the following indentifiers: Student number, birthdate or last 4 digits of your Social Security number.
  • If you are unable to get your problem resolved via an email to emailsupport@siskiyous.edu you can call (530) 938-5523 for assistance.

Can I change my email address?

What are the steps involved in registering using Navigator for returning students?

  • Go to the Navigator Portal by clicking on the Navigator logo on the College's main web page or the link at the top left on this page.
  • Log in to the portal with your User Name and Password (see portal FAQs for assistance)
  • Go to the Student tab
  • Select Look Up Classes / Register Online on the Registration Tools channel
  • Select the Term in which you want to register
  • Conduct a Class Search for the classes you want
  • Check the box next to the class you want to take and click on Register or click Add to Worksheet. To keep adding classes, scroll to the bottom of the page and enter the 4-digit CRNs in the boxes then Submit Changes
  • If a class has already started, you will be taken to a Registration Add Authorization Code page. Next to the box labeled INCOMPLETE, you must enter a four-digit code that you have to get from the instructor. After entering the code, click the Validate button, then Submit Changes, at which point you should see your current schedule.
  • Check your current schedule for accuracy and proceed to Pay Fees at the bottom of the page
  • Review the fees you owe and note the total amount. Select Credit Card Payment at the bottom of the page, complete the BOGW form, or submit a Financial Aid Application
  • Be sure to use the Back to Student Tab to return to the portal, NOT the browser Back button

Do I have to Apply for Admission before registering for classes?
Yes. If you have not attended COS before, you will need to Apply for Admission.

  • Go to the Navigator Portal by clicking on the Navigator logo on the College's main web page or the link at the top left on this page and select the option Apply for Admission -or- click on Apply Now from anywhere you see it on the website.
  • Be sure to fill out the forms completely. Do not skip questions or sections.
  • Create a Login ID and PIN. In case you can't complete the process in one sitting, this will allow you to return to it. After you have successfully completed the Application process, you will NOT NEED this login information again. Once your application has been accepted, you will receive a Navigator User Name, login information, and your Student ID.
  • Be sure you include an email address where we can reach you. This is where we will send your User Name for Navigator access. Your User Name will be sent to you via the email address you have given us within 24 business hours. Please be sure you have waited this length of time before contacting us. If it doesn't arrive, please email Application Help or call (530) 938-5597.
  • If you have completed the process successfully, you will see your Student ID (in the format of S000xxxxx) on the screen. Please make note of it and keep it secure. This will be your ID for the duration of your time at COS.
  • Occasionally, if the system cannot identify that you are creating a new record, you will not get a Student ID at the end of the application process, but instead, an error message that will let you know who to call to resolve the issue. Call the College to have your account created.
  • When you have successfully received your User Name and logged in to Navigator, follow the instructions above (for returning students) to register for classes.
  • Please be aware that once you have registered, or are on a waitlist, for a class, the College will create a new student email address for you. It will be in the format of username@ins.siskiyous.edu. From this point on, the College will communicate with you through your new COS student email address. Be sure you either check this email address regularly or have it forwarded to one you will see regularly. See information about COS student email and forwarding your email. This new email address is a Microsoft account and will not expire once you finish your studies at COS.

What if I get a “Registration Add Error” message?
                Prerequisite and Test Score error – The class you have checked for registration has a prerequisite requirement which must be approved by Counseling and Support Services. Please contact Counseling and Support Services at (530) 938-5353.

                Repeat exceeds 0 for satisfactory grade count – Most classes at COS may only be taken one time. Some classes are repeatable; these are noted in the COS Catalog. This repeat message means that you have taken the class the maximum number of times allowed. If you feel this is an error, please contact Counseling and Support Services at (530) 938-5353.

                Time conflict with CRN XXXX – This means the new class that you have requested to add is conflicting (in whole or in part) with at least one of the classes already on your schedule. Check the days and times of your classes for the conflict. At this time, you will only be able to register for one of the conflicting classes online. If there is an overlap, you must complete an Overlapping Classes Permit that must be signed by both instructors and the appropriate Area Dean then submitted to the Enrollment Services Office to register for the overlapping class. The Overlapping Classes Permit and Add/Drop form are available in the Forms for Students area of the COS website.

                You may NOT add or drop classes due to holds on your record – You may view your holds by selecting View Holds from the Student Records menu. The typical holds are for:
Payment – If you owe more than $50, you will need to pay the fees in order to register for classes (or add/drop classes)
Dismissal – If you are on Academic or Progress Dismissal, you will need to meet with a counselor

How does the waitlist work?

How do I pay for my classes?
You may pay for classes by credit card, debit card, cash, check, or if you qualify, by Financial Aid or the Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOGW). The online system allows you to pay by credit card, debit card or by completing and submitting a BOGW form. If you qualify for BOGW, it will be posted to your account within one week.
