The tea ceremony (cha no yu) is an important part of Japanese culture. Sen no Rikyu is considered the greatest tea master and it was he who perfected the ceremony in the 16th century. The tea ceremony is associated with Zen Buddhism, which values the simple wabi type of ceremony.
