Chouchin are lanterns constructed of paper and
split bamboo, said to have originally been made by the Buddha in order
to protect insects from harm. Hence, chouchin is a symbol of
ahimsa, the non-harming of living beings.

century. They are used for advertising, celebrations, announcements,
and letting people know the store is open. Family crests are commonly
painted on chouchin.
