Chouchin are lanterns constructed of paper and split bamboo, said to have originally been made by the Buddha in order to protect insects from harm. Hence, chouchin is a symbol of ahimsa, the non-harming of living beings.

Chouchin have been used in Japan since the 14th century. They are used for advertising, celebrations, announcements, and letting people know the store is open. Family crests are commonly painted on chouchin.
