Buddhist tomb In Shinto burials the body was buried and covered with a stone to prevent it from rising again. When Buddhism arrived in Japan, burial practices were handed over to Buddhists. Even though most Buddhists are cremated, the burial tradition of Shinto is still followed in Japan. During O-bon, and at other times of the year, the graves are cleaned by family members.
