large Shinto shrine There are several terms used for Shinto shrines, including jinja, yashiro, jingu, and taisha. The ja in jinja and the gu in jingu also both mean shrine, with the jin (shin) referring to the gods (as in the word Shinto, or Way of the Gods). The terms jingu and taisha are used in reference to major shrines. Taisha means great shrine, with tai meaning big or great and sha (same as the ja above) meaning shrine. Simple Guide to Shinto |
