dry landscape garden

"karesansui" in kanji

The first character you see in the kanji above has the meaning of "withered, desiccated, or dry." In the above word, karesansui, the "kare" character means "dry." The next two characters are "mountain" and "water." When these two characters are used together they mean "landscape." Thus karesansui means "dry landscape" garden.
