Fox near Inari-jinja in Ueno Park, Tokyo
July 9, 2003

fox

As in other parts of the world, the fox is viewed as cunning and crafty. It is also a trickster and can transform itself, often into the shape of a woman. In Japan the fox is associated with Inari shrines and is considered to be Inari's (Rice God) messenger. There are typically two foxes guarding Inari shrines, with one holding a jewel under its paw and the other with a key in its mouth.
