rice paddle

The wooden-style rice paddle was invented by the priest Seishin on Miyajima during the Edo period. Shamoji are found in various shapes and sizes on Miyajima, including the world's largest, and is a common souvenir there. Rice paddles are also a symbol of good luck. This style of paddle is now commonly made of plastic when used for cooking. The original rice ladle was made of bamboo.
