white wedding kimono A wedding kimono is called uchikake, but when all the layers are pure white then it is called shiromuku. Using white became popular during feudal times. White symbolized the ability of the wife to change as need be to suit her new family, because white fabric can be dyed any color. The groom wears a black haori, or jacket, over a hakama which in turn is worn over a short kimono, or montsuki. The white emblem on his kimono is his family crest, or kamon. Eyewitness Japan |
