Tatami mats are used as a floor covering in traditional Japanese homes and temples. Many modern Japanese homes have a tatami-mat room with a tokonoma. The size of a room is determined by how many tatami mats fit into the room. A typical size room has about six tatami mats, but two, three, four and a half, and eight-mat rooms are also used.
