Felis oregonensis. Oregon Puma; Mountain Lion. [Felis concolor California Mountain Lion, Cougar, Puma, Catamount]
Lynx fasciatus pallescens. Wild-cat. [Lynx rufus Pallid Wildcat, Bobcat]
Characters.--Similar to L. fasciatus, but slightly smaller and everywhere very much paler, particularly the head and face; basal black ear parch (in winter pelage) indistinct or absent; gray ear patch larger; general color hoary gray, contrasted with the dark rich rufous of fasiatus. Skull like that of fasiatus, but slightly smaller; canssial teeth and second upper molar less swollen.
Remarks.--Specimens from the region about Shasta (Klamath country on the north and Pitt and McCloud rivers on the south) differ slightly from Trout Lake specimens; they show less tendency to spotting and have slightly larger carnassial teeth and audital bullae.
This wild-cat is fairly common in the chaparral of the basal sloped of Shasta. One was seen a little below Wagon Camp, and tracks were several times noted by Vernon Bailey in the trail a little above Wagon Camp. Tracks were seen also in Shasta Valley by W.H. Osgood. In 1883-84 C.H. Townsend trapped many wild-cats along McCloud River and the lower part of Squaw Creek, where they were "apparently as numerous as [gray] foxes, and as easily secured." Most of these belong to the present species, but one belong to the following:
