Figure 2: : Map of the boundaries between Earth's lithospheric plates (Simkin and others, 1994). Divergent boundaries are shown as red lines; convergent boundaries as blue lines with sawteeth pointing in the direction of the downgoing plate; shear boundaries as dotted black lines; and broad plate boundary zones where individual boundaries are not well defined as red ruled areas. Red dots mark the positions of hotspots, where plumes of hot mantle rock rise to the surface from Earth's interior.
