Figure 30: Map of hazard zones for pyroclastic flows and surges from future eruptions at or near the summit of Mount Shasta (Crandell and Nichols, 1987). Sites in zone 1 are most likely to be overrun by future flows, whereas those in zone 3 are only likely to be affected by pyroclastic flows longer than any that have occurred during the past 10,000 years. Sites in zone 3 may, however, be affected by pyroclastic surges sweeping out ahead of pyroclastic flows from the inner zones.
