The Atsugewi Indians consist of two groups, the Atsugé ("pine-tree people"), or Hat Creek Indians, and the Apwaruge ("juniper-tree people"), also known as Dixie Valley Indians (Kniffen 315; Garth, Atsugewi 236). Alternate names for the Atsugewi include: Atsge, Atsugei, Stsugewei, Hat Creek Indians, Pacamallies, and Pit River Indians (Brandt and Davis-Kimball xv).
