Cheewa James estimates the Modoc population prior to 1800, to have been between 400 and 800 persons. In 1886, Dunn wrote that "There had have never been than four or five hundred of them since the whites knew them" (461), while Cook has suggested that prehistoric populations were closer to 3,000 (69).
